Mid-June 2022

Community Coffee Shop – Mondays 10-11.30am:  St Mary’s Community Coffee Shop is now open in the church hall every Monday.  This will continue throughout the summer (not Bank Holidays) running alongside the Community Fridge.  We are selling coffee, a selection of teas, individually wrapped biscuits and delicious cake from COOK.  The team look forward to welcoming you soon, whether you are just visiting the coffee shop, or fridge, or both! Please let Julie Partridge know if you would like to join the Monday team, julie@stmarysfetcham.org.uk

Afternoon Teas – Sat 25 June:  These monthly teas are growing in popularity as a social get-together for the senior community.  The next one is Sat 25 June, and we are also taking bookings for the 30 July.  Please book either via the Parish Office of go to the What’s On page of our website

The Well – Sun 26 Jun, 6-7pm in The Lady Chapel:  This is the first of the new Sunday Reflective evenings.  The Well is a pause at the end of one week and before the beginning of the next.  It is a space to simply say “Here I am” to God.  A time to allow your heart to open towards that invisible but ever-present author of life, and to drink from the living water that meets your needs and satisfies forever.  Within the Well there is music, scripture, reflection, prayer and silence.  It is a safe place where all are welcome.  The Well is led by Nanas Callander and Brigitte Furze.  Please do contact the Parish Office with any questions you may have.

Notice of Church closure – Mon 27 June to Fri 1 July:  Work to replace the cabling for the streetlights will be running the length of the driveway.  Although it is planned in stages, this may still cause some disruption.  Please be mindful of that whilst visiting the church grounds.  Also, as the vestry roof is having some work done and it was felt easier to not open the church during the day whilst work is carried out. The Thursday morning 10am service will still go ahead.

Platinum Jubilee Flowers:  A huge thank you to the team of flowers arrangers who did such an amazing display for ‘A Royal Garden Party’ for everyone to enjoy in the church for the Jubilee.  They filled the church with teapots, cups and saucers, jugs, cakes, umbrellas, wellington boots and many other imaginative floral displays.  Even a corgi made an appearance!

Over a hundred people came to view the flowers and enjoy the hospitality, on a gloriously sunny afternoon – thank you all for your support.  Liz would also like to thank the willing volunteers who served tea and made cakes, making this wonderful event an appropriate celebration to commemorate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Thursday Morning Coffee:  Our regular monthly coffee morning enjoyed their annual special treat of scones and strawberries earlier this week!  The regular coffee morning takes place on the 3rd Thursday each month and anyone is welcome.

Fetcham Festival Fun: Thank you to everyone who came along to help on the stall, or set up/clear up.  We had a great day in the heart of the busy community event by having the Human Fruit Machine, Beat the (Vicar) Goalie and secondhand books.

Bishop Andrew signs letter against the Rwanda deportation policy: A letter has been sent to the Times signed by the Archbishops and all the members of the Lords Spiritual regarding the Rwanda deportation policy. The text is below:

Sir, Whether or not the first deportation flight leaves Britain today for Rwanda, this policy should shame us as a nation. Rwanda is a brave country recovering from catastrophic genocide. The shame is our own, because our Christian heritage should inspire us to treat asylum seekers with compassion, fairness and justice, as we have for centuries. Those to be deported to Rwanda have had no chance to appeal, or reunite with family in Britain. They have had no consideration of their asylum claim, recognition of their medical or other needs, or any attempt to understand their predicament.

Many are desperate people fleeing unspeakable horrors. Many are Iranians, Eritreans and Sudanese citizens, who have an asylum grant rate of at least 88 per cent. These are people Jesus had in mind as he said when we offer hospitality to a stranger, we do it for him. They are the vulnerable that the Old Testament calls us to value. We cannot offer asylum to everyone, but we must not outsource our ethical responsibilities, or discard international law — which protects the right to claim asylum.

We must end the evil trafficking; many churches are involved in fighting this evil. This needs global co-operation across every level of society. To reduce dangerous journeys to the UK we need safe routes: the church will continue to advocate for them. But deportations — and the potential forced return of asylum seekers to their home countries — are not the way. This immoral policy shames Britain.
