August 2022

Prayer Meeting at Cock Lane Rec:  Sat 30 July, 9am – This Saturday and all through August, we will meet for our 9am prayer meeting on the Cock Lane recreation ground, starting off near the Scout hut.  We feel that this large, green, open space is a gift to our community.  Come and pray with us to find out how God might want to use it!  All are welcome.

Message from Helen Bowen:  It’s good to be back in circulation. Warmest thanks for your prayers, many kindnesses and offers of help. It’s wonderful to feel upheld through somewhat challenging times.

Secondhand Books –  Sun 21 July: Whilst the homemade stall is having a break in August, the second-hand books will still be available in the hall to browse and make purchases.  All money goes to help Kibera.

Bereavement Café –  Wed 3 Aug, 10-11.30am:  Bereavement affects people in different ways.  If you feel you could benefit from a friendly supportive environment and a chance to chat with other bereaved folk, please come along to the church hall on the first Wed of the month.   The Bereavement Café is run in conjunction with the Princess Alice Hospice where all our “listeners” have been trained.

Golf Day – Thurs 1 Sept: Taking place at the Drift Golf Club East Horsley, Leatherhead, KT24 5HD, from 1pm with BBQ at the club afterwards, cost £37.  To book a place contact Brian before 18 Aug on bjegles@googlemail.com or sign-up on MyChurchSuite.  Do invite your friends, all welcome.

Experience our 11.15 Worship Band –  Sun 4 Sept, 12noon:  The worship band will hold an informal practice session, where ANYBODY who loves to worship can come and find out what it`s like to be a part of the band. Whether you play a triangle or sing, whether you read music or improvise around the tune, whether you are young or slightly more mature: if you love to worship, we would love to hear from you and we’ll then send you some more details about the day!  Contact furzefamily@hotmail.co.uk

Ride and Stride – Sat 10 Sept:  Come and spend a very enjoyable day walking or cycling around some of our beautiful local churches, whilst raising money for the Surrey Churches Preservation Trust.  Half the money raised comes back to St Mary’s and it’s a great day.  Sponsorship forms are available at the back of the church.  To find out more email Sarah Mackay

Heritage Open Day at St Mary’s – Sat 10 Sept:  We are once again opening our doors to visitors who enjoy this annual opportunity to visit places of heritage, community and history.  The brochure for the Mole Valley area is now available to view online  Mole Valley Heritage Open Days 2022.  To find out more about the history of St Mary’s you may wish to take a look at our website where there are several documents of interest found in the Our Church page.

Thank you to those who have offered to help so far.  Last year we had hundreds of visitors and we need a considerable team of folk to help. Please speak with Sarah Mackay or David Slater to find out more.  Do please help, even if you only have an hour to spare.

HELP! The Last Night of the Proms:  Sat 10 Sept – It’s an understatement to say there’s a lot going on that day – and this is another plea for help.  Corinne has a prior commitment that day (though should be back in the evening) and wonder if somebody would please step up to help with the organisation and prepare the hall, if not we’ll have to forego the evening which would be a shame.  Please get in touch with Corinne (800885 or corinne@stmarysfetcham.org.uk)  Thank you!

Guildford Cathedral Coffee Concerts:  Thurs 15 Sept – Sadly, they have had to cancel the August coffee concerts.  However, they will be joining the ‘World’s Biggest Coffee Morning’, for Macmillan Cancer Support on 15 Sept.  The singer/song writer Emily Bolton will be performing.  Coffee from 10.30am; concert 11.15am-12noon.

Compassion Fatigue Course:  Sat 10 Sept, 9.30am-12.30pm – Jayne Ellis will lead a morning session focusing on ‘Compassion Fatigue’ at Godalming Baptist Church.  If you are constantly giving out then this is the morning for you!  Jayne will explore the risk factors, causes, signs and symptoms of compassion fatigue and then explore some simple but effective self-care strategies.  To book a place, cost £10 per person, please contact Sally on Pollard-pollard3@hotmail.co.uk or 01483-428646.

They also have 2 other Life Issue sessions coming up in the autumn-‘Growing Old Disgracefully’ and ‘Bereavement’ which was over- subscribed when they ran the session in February.  Posters are in the hall foyer or ask Karen for the info to be emailed.

New National Safeguarding survey:  A vital national survey has been launched to understand how victims and survivors would like to be involved in the development and implementation of a Church of England survivor engagement framework.  This framework will set out how victims and survivors of abuse will inform the Church’s work to develop and improve safeguarding.  The survey is not about asking questions relating to victims’ and survivors’ past or present experiences of abuse, harm or neglect but to understand better how victims and survivors would like to be involved in developing the framework, in what ways and what formats.

The anonymous survey will run for two months and is open to any victim or survivor who would like to engage with the Church to inform its work.  The questions were formed with survivors who have provided valuable input and feedback in terms of content and promotion of the survey.  Learning from the survey will inform a publicly accessible report, which will include key themes and next steps to develop the framework. Please do share as appropriate.

We continue to pray for those who are unwell:  Elaine Mead, Don Lamberth, Vera Cameron, Lynn Alsop, John Cooper and Anais Featherstone.
